DIY Reading Lamp Makeover (Krylon Ivy Leaf)
I’ve been a fan of spray painting with Krylon’s Duo paint + primer for awhile now, so when Krylon asked me if I’d like to try out any color of my choice for a DIY decor project, I hopped at the chance to try out a shade called ‘Ivy Leaf‘.
In August I talked about how my living room has evolved to include a few pops of green. At the time, I came across a fab reading lamp at Homesense (Canadian) which was the perfect shade of green for my room. But, I hesitated, and of course, when I went back for it, it had been snapped up by some other lucky shopper. (Note to self: At Homesense, it’s always safer to buy on impulse!
).
Krylon’s Ivy Leaf is a near perfect match for the shade of green I added to my room. Plus, I just happened to have a pewter reading lamp in another room that wasn’t being used much. The only problem was that there was nothing wrong with it. I’m always anxious about painting something that is perfectly fine the way it is! I felt the same way about painting the frames of my new living room artwork too. But I loved how the art turned out, so I decided to go for it with this project too.
It’s still perfect spray painting weather in the backyard, so I brought my lamp out there, took a deep breath, and started spraying.
I’m not a great spray-painter, which I realize sounds kinda silly, but there actually IS a skill to getting a great finish with spray paint. It takes several thin coats with a steady, even flow. But I’m not a patient person, so I’ve ended up with drippy-looking finishes on projects. But I’ve never had this problem with Krylon Duo. It has a gorgeous consistency, and goes on very evenly. It also dries fast, so you can finish most projects within an hour. This project ended up looking pretty close to a manufactured/ professional job with very minimal time and effort.
Here’s how my new lamp looks in my living room…
It’s almost identical to the lamp I missed out on at Homesense, and it’s just the pop of unexpected color in my blue-cream room that I was hoping for.
Disclosure: Krylon provided this product to try at no charge. But all opinions I provided here are 100% my own.
Until next time,

Turned out great! I will definitely have to try Krylon next time I buy spray paint!
I personally love it! Thanks for coming by, Kim! ~Kerri
Great shade of green! I am sure the pewter colour was lovely too, but this is a more “custom” colour for you room.
Bronwyn, thanks for reinforcing my decision to paint it

you are so inspiring to me! i love your blog
Such a sweet comment! Thanks so much Kelly! ~Kerri
What a great colour! I hear you on the lack of patience when spray-painting too….in fact, the only reason any of my projects have failed, is when I’ve rushed and end up with globby drips!
Where did you buy this stuff? I don’t think I’ve seen it at Rona, which is where I shop most often for spray paint.
Hey Carol-Anne! I’ve found it a bunch of places. I’m not sure about Rona, but for sure I’ve bought it at Michaels and Home Depot. If I think of anywhere else, I’ll let you know! ~Kerri
