Keep Calm & Carry On: Stenciled Cork Board

This post was most recently updated on September 23rd, 2019

I have to admit that I am a bit of a sucker for the back to shopping school season.

Instead of dreading it, I actually look forward to it.  There’s just something about the smell of Staples’ or Walmart’s back to school display that instantly transports me back in time to the start of a new school year. Oh how I loved my new shiny and perfectly organized pencil case – stuffed with immaculately sharpened HB pencils and Crayola colouring leads. (And, yes, I am a geek ;-))

When shopping in the school supply section for my daughter (who’s now 7 and going to Grade 2), I always seem to throw a few ‘mommy goodies’ in the cart along with her crayolas and coloured duotangs! Mommy’s latest back to ‘school’ supplies include pretty post-its and thumb-tacks and coloured Sharpies. Ooooh, how I love coloured Sharpies, especially the pink and aqua ones ;-).

But my best back to school purchase so far is this adorable framed bulletin board which is already hung in my new craft room / office!  I immediately knew I had to have it. I have a weakness for anything ‘Keep Calm & Carry On’, despite the saying’s over-abundant (and sometimes kitschy) use in home fashion these days.

When I saw it, I debated buying it, but only because I knew I could easily make one just like it.

It is SUCH as easy DIY project! All you’d need would be an empty frame, a roll of cork (cut to size), stencils and white paint.  You could actually stencil any saying or pattern you’d like.  For example, stenciling your child’s name in big bold letters would be awesome.

But, hey, let’s be real, I have twin toddlers and a 7-year old at home.  I’m not one of those DIYer’s who makes things to save money.  I soooo wish I was.  (As does my husband, I am sure). No. My personal DIY philosophy is simple: I only make something I want if I can’t find it already well-made by somebody else!

So this time I bought it. But hopefully I’ve inspired you hard core DIYers to make one yourself!

Until next time, keep calm and carry on,

KL
