DIY googly-eyed bat wreath

This post was most recently updated on September 22nd, 2019

I have to be honest – as an adult I’ve never really been one for Halloween. (Sorry!)

Our twins boys, last year, in the pumpkin patch!

The whole idea of kids taking candy from strangers, and then hoarding a suitcase of it under their bed for the next 6 months, well, it just kind of bugged me.  I still don’t love that part of it, but I have to say that over the past few years, I’ve really gotten back into the spirit.

Halloween is just  so much more fun when you have adorable little people to dress up, and who count down the days in October like it’s Christmas!

Since having kids, I love decorating for Halloween. And because I have toddlers again, I have the perfect excuse to ‘cute-ify’ my Halloween decor.

Truthfully, I’m the one who gets creeped out by all the gory stuff.  I’m sure that if I hung up a few bloody zombies, the boys would simply mutter a casual “Oh wow mama” and then toddle back to watching Handy Manny; meanwhile, my 7-yo daughter and I would both have nightmares for a week!

I guess that’s why I’ve never had a Halloween wreath.  Fall wreaths, yes.  But never Halloween.  I wanted something cute, not scary, and everything I’ve seen out there just seems to be so spooky.

Then last week, while at Michael’s, I spotted these super-sized googly eyes!  I immediately knew they’d have to come home with me.

I also brought home 3 black metal bats, and 3 grapevine wreaths…and ta-da…here’s how it all came together…

Making this wreath was pretty easy.  First, I used my glue gun to attach the eyes to the bats.  Next, I used black cheesecloth and fluffy white spider web material (both from the dollar store) to cover the wreaths.  I secured the cheesecloth using floral wire, and I glued down the white webby stuff with my glue gun.  {Just a tip: When adhering things that are going outside, try and use wire if possible.  But if you have to use glue, be sure to use a glue gun, otherwise, it might not hold.  That’s been my experience anyway.} I then wired the bats to each grapevine wreath, and added a few drops of glue here and there so they wouldn’t blow around too much.  I then used floral wire to attach the three wreaths together.  I also looped ribbon and twine around the wreaths to hide the wire…and of course, to add a pop of pretty. 😉

Miss Queen Bee was on her way to her first Halloween party of the season, and made a great photo prop…

The happy smiles just make it all worth it!

I’ll be posting some other Halloween decorating ideas throughout the week!

Enjoy your day,

Kerri
