Our basement guest bedroom needs a little makeover. (Gosh, I love when that happens!) In addition to making-over the boys’ bedroom (I’ll post on that room tomorrow), I’ve been thinking about how to create a pretty and soothing bedroom for guests.
I’ve collected inspiration photos of rooms with blues and corals for awhile now, and the guest room makeover is giving me the perfect chance to try it out. I chose Behr Marquee’s ‘Soft Shoe’ as its just a very soft hint of coral – almost the colour of a little girl’s leather ballet slipper.
Along with Soft Shoe, I’ll be using all three of these gorgeous hues in the guest room.

Behr Marquee is a new one-coat paint. Yup, I said one-coat peeps! If you’ve followed my blog awhile, you might already know that I’m a big fan of Behr paint, and it’s definitely my fave for painting furniture. Being able to do it in one-coat is icing on the cake!
Behr Marquee Nightstand Makeover
The piece I started with was this black side table.
I was so excited when I opened the quart to see that it is just as beautiful as the colour chip.
Using this light colour on the black side table really tested the ‘one coat’ feature of Behr Marquee paint. This was my very first stroke, and as you can see, the coverage is pretty incredible.
The only thing I’ll suggest is not to paint in sunlight on a hot day. Uh duh, right? Of course, this is a painting tip I already knew, but I couldn’t help myself. Our weather this spring was dismal, so I took my project outside to enjoy one of the first warm and sunny days. What’s a sun-loving girl to do?
This Behr paint, however, dries quickly, so painting in the sun or heat only hastens the process. And, if you haven’t finished a section and if you pull your brush or roller through it again, you might end up with some dried paint flecks or brush strokes in your paint. Once I realized how quickly it was drying, I just worked a little faster.
When painting with Behr Marquee, it’s also suggested that you:
- fully saturate the roller, reloading frequently.
- maintain a wet edge while painting.
- work in small sections, and do not overspread the paint.

Because it only took one coat, I had this little makeover completed in record time. I added the pretty crystal knob to the drawer for a little glam. Yay! Instant gratification.
I can’t wait to put this little pretty in the guest room once I’m finished painting the walls and pulling it all together. Stay tuned for that.
