This post was most recently updated on January 11th, 2021

In this post: I’m sharing an Interior Design Mood Board for a cozy, modern cottage family room with winter decorating in mind! You’ll also find four tips to add more visual warmth to your own spaces during the winter months.

Hello friends! As promised, I’m here with the first post in a new series I’m adding here on the blog: Mood Board Mondays. One Monday a month, I’m going to create an interior design mood board to share with you. This month, it’s about winter decorating.

New Blog Series: Mood Board Mondays

Why I Love Interior Design Mood Boards

Over the years, people have told me that that hardest part of any room makeover is pulling it together COHESIVELY. This is particularly true in a family room which serves so many functions. Without an overall vision for the space, they waste money buying stuff that never looks ‘quite right’. Well, my sweet friends, that’s the very reason decorators start projects with an interior design mood board.

What is a Mood Board

So what exactly is a mood board? It’s the visual plan for the design process. Creating a mood board:

I’ve posted interior design mood boards here in the past, but it hasn’t been a regular thing. By posting them more frequently, I’m hoping to demonstrate how furniture and accessories should work together in space, especially in a family room. I’ll also be posting all the sources, so, if you really love a space I post, you can find the exact furniture and accessories. (Whoop!)

Modern Cottage Family Room: Winter Decorating Mood Board

My first mood board in the series is all about winter decorating! This time I created a mood board for a cozy modern cottage family room. It shows how you can add more visual warmth to a space during the winter months.

Winter decorating is all about making your nest a little cozier. Do you find your family room feels a little naked once the holiday decorations get packed away in January? And, on top of that, it’s freaking freezing outside. Double whammy! But, not to worry, there are lots of easy ways to create a cozier, modern cottage family room with winter decorating.

4 Tips to Create Visual Warmth in Winter Decorating

Take a closer look at the mood board. You’ll see that there are four things that make it feel warm and inviting. Consider adding some of these in your own winter decorating:

1. Texture

Adding texture to a family room creates instant coziness. My favourite ways to add texture are furry pillows and throws, and rattan or wicker home decor accessories. (Example: The Mongolian faux fur pillow, cable knit throw, and rattan stool in the modern cottage family mood board.)

2. Pillows and Throws

I have a slight obsession with toss pillows, lol. But, for winter decorating, they’re a mainstay in our own modern cottage family room. A sofa filled with layers of toss pillows just looks more cozy and inviting in winter, don’t you think? Cozy throws in a wicker basket or on a blanket ladder do the job too. (See mood board for blanket ladder.)

3. Warm Wood Tones

I love white rooms like the next person, but, in winter they can feel super cold. So for winter decorating, I usually add more warm wood tones. White and wood look amazing when paired together, and the warm tones in wood just help take the edge off a cooler colour scheme. (See the round wood tray, wood tone lamp, white washed wood mirror, blanket ladder and rug in the mood board.)

4. Trees & Greenery

Do you miss the warm glow of your Christmas tree this time of year? It’s easy to replicate this feeling in your winter decorating by adding a decorative tree to your family room. Personally, I’m a big fan of olive trees. (See mood board.) I love the delicate leaves. You can even add some fairy lights to a tree for a cozy glow. Pops of other greenery (like boxwood topiaries) throughout a space also help warm up a room. For more great winter decorating ideas, check out this HGTV article.
