10 Coastal Style Staircases that Inspire

Hello, friends!  Today I’m sharing 10 gorgeous coastal style staircases – along with some fun news about a new coastal-inspired online shop I just launched!

 

 

It’s been a bit, hasn’t it?  I promise, I haven’t forgotten you.  I’ve just had my head down on a project that I finally launched! My modern coastal-inspired online shop called JanieJute just opened. 

 

 

Living on an island in the Atlantic Ocean, I’ve always loved coastal style decorating.  And, since building our cottage/ lake house last year, I’ve been focused on sharing more coastal-inspired decorating ideas with you guys.

 

Of course, the JanieJute collection has lots of stripes and crisp blue and white, like this gorgeous, painted coastal style staircase below.

 

 

 

 

It took me awhile to decide what kind of staircase would complement the nautical vibe I wanted in this new house.  At first, I was absolutely sure that I was going to do a rope hand rail similar to this one. (See Rope Decor Ideas)

 

 

I love this look SO much.  Of all the coastal style staircases I’d been drooling over,  almost all had rope handrails.  But when we actually looked at the house plan, we realized that we didn’t have enough wall on each side of our staircase to include this AWESOME feature.

 

 

That was such a bummer, and I still have MAJOR staircase envy when I see these photos.  

 

 

 

So, after putting my rope handrail dreams behind me, I moved on to other coastal style staircases.  I also loved the idea of using wire and ‘x’ formations like this gorgeous inspiration photo.

 

 

We also considered a simple, open staircase with floating treads like the staircase below. And, using glass instead of spindles just feels so clean and uncomplicated.  Everything about this photo is just so zen, isn’t it?

 

 

That said, there was also something appealing about combining floating treads with a more traditional railing. Photos like this one felt a little more cozy to me, and seemed to fit better with the vision I had for the space.

 

 

There were so many coastal style staircases to choose from that the staircase design was one of the last things we decided on.  And, when you wait too long, you know what happens, right? Yup.  Your choices automatically get narrowed down for you, lol.

 

In the end, we ran out of time to implement some of these styles because they required special-order supplies, or more time to build them than we had before our house sale closed.  Don’t you hate it when that happens?  We could have waited to close, but when you have your heart set on a specific date, it’s hard to change it.

 

In the end, we decided on a simple staircase with a fence-style railing. We used chunky treads, and over-sized posts to create a big impact. It’s funny how things work out, though, because I could not be happier than I am with these stairs.

 

 

I love the simplicity, and how they complement the horizontal lines in the shiplap walls. The staircase feels modern without taking away from the cozy cottage feel of the space.
