About this time every winter, I start to crave greenery. Our winter weather is long and cold, and except for evergreen trees, not much else stays green through the season. While snow can be pretty and fun, for me, it gets old quickly. My favorite time of the year is when the buds finally appear on the trees again!
Without greenery outside, I usually resort to getting my greenery fix by adding a few artificial plants and wreaths here and there. I am ashamed to say that, in this home, which we’ve been living in for over 5 years, I don’t think I’ve had even one living plant. {Well, except for Miss G’s lima bean sprout when she was in Kindergarten. Does that count? OK, maybe not. 😉 }
I’m not a plant hater or anything ;-). I actually had lots of house plants in our last home, and really enjoyed them. But that was pre-kids. After I had children, I had to choose between feeding and watering them or the plants. Of course, the kids won!
But after Christmas this year, I decided it was time to bring back some plants!
I mean what kind of mom am I not to have a living plant? Pretty soon my kids are gonna think they’re living in a manufactured world like Thneedville (from The Lorax)!
So, to avoid emotionally scaring my kids for leading a plant-less life, I went out and bought a couple of real plants! Real, as in: needs soil, water and sunshine to live. I started with two. I figured that was as much as I could handle right now. Sad, but I know my limits! It’s been a whole month, and they are both still living…and dare I say, thriving?
I forgot how much pleasure you can get from watching a plant grow.
One of the boys is fascinated with the orchid.
I think he thinks its a bean stock, and keeps waiting for it to sprout!
{By the way, this orchid is ‘watered’ with an ice cube. I’m not sure if that is normal for orchids, but I thought it was kinda cool!}
If you’re looking to add a little life to your home this winter, I highly recommend a plant or two. Next time you’re grocery shopping, pick up one or two like I did. I’m betting it’ll have a bigger impact on your home and your mood than you might think!
Until next time,

I agree! I can’t wait until this grey winter is over. I don’t have any plants in my home right now but am inspired to add some. I love the orchid plant. It’s so pretty!

Yes totally agree, a bit of nature in the form of a plant or two around the house makes all the difference!
