Have you noticed that I haven’t posted about my craft room yet?
I cannot tell you how happy this craft room makes me. I’ve been a ‘crafter’ since I can remember, but I’ve never really had enough dedicated space for all my crafty stuff.
Well, despite my excitement over it, it’s still not 100% complete or ‘photo ready’- and perhaps it never will be, lol. I guess the thing about a craft room is that it inspires you to be crafty, and therein lies the problem of “the uncompleted craft room”.
Since I’ve moved my stuff in there, it’s pretty much looked like this…
So, I thought I’d share a little work-in-progress craft room ‘tour’ for now. And if it’s ever tidy enough for a better one, I’ll post some more pics then!
Last week, I posted about this wall art that I made from stationary and scrapbook paper. I’ve since added a couple of other pieces like the ‘K’ (found at Michaels for $5), and I made the the large CREATE piece with mirrored letters.
I used the IKEA Expedit storage unit that was already in the room. It once stored my kids’ toys before we moved the playroom downstairs. Lucky for me, it was too daunting a task (for us anyway, lol) to disassemble it and move it down there. So it stayed. It’s just as perfect for craft storage. Gotta love IKEA. The chair in this photo was my grandmother’s. I refinished it, and shared that post earlier this year. Since I took this pic, I found this cute pillow for it…
These pretty pink quatrefoil boxes which were a great find at Homesense started my whole ‘pink’ inspiration for the room. I fell for them immediately.
You can find these ‘snap together’ opaque storage plastic boxes at Walmart from time to time. I’ve been hoarding them whenever I find them there. They are cheap and stylish. PS – If you live in my local area, please don’t shell the place out of them – leave some for me!
I am mad for industrial style wire baskets, but they’re not exactly practical for storage (the holes). I found these ones at HomeSense earlier this year, but never found a great use for them, until now.
I found these pink votives at Michaels. It’s truly embarassing how cheap they were. But I’ll tell you anyway. $1.50 each. Yup.
I labelled most of my storage baskets with chalkboard tags. Whoever invented the chalkboard tag needs a medal. Seriously.
I covered two really big bulletin boards with this great gingham check fabric for just $20. Wanna know how? I used a shower curtain! It’s a great way to get a lot of fabric economically.
Here’s the other one…I hung this one from a pink and black polka dot ribbon.
This DIY ‘crafty word’ collection that hangs over my craft desk was made using my Silhouette sketch pens and pastels. I posted about it last week.
Oh, and in case you haven’t noticed by now, I am an accessories junky! Accessories were a cheap way to add some girly pops of pink, without committing to changing the neutral paint and window coverings!
I was lucky enough to already have this white built-in storage unit / counter in this room. My daughter used it for crafts when it was her playroom. It still stores all my kid craft supplies – like colouring books, finger paints and foamies – behind closed doors.
That’s it for now! Hope you enjoyed the tour!
Have a fab weekend,
Kerri
PS, I’m sharing this at some of my favorite blogs found here!
A couple of weeks back, I guest posted at Making the World Cuter, where I shared my tips for creating a bright and cheerful basement space. I just realized that I never did post that to my own blog for my readers. So in case you missed it, here it is…
————————-
I’m Kerri-Lynn from A Pop of Pretty (previously called My Decorating Addiction), a decor and crafting blog all about creating a pretty home with worn and whimsical flair. I’m so honored that Tiffany invited me to guest post here at Making the World Cuter which is one of my favorite stops in Blogland!
Today, I’m going to share some tips for creating a bright and cheerful basement space. We recently finished renovating and decorating this space in our home.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. When I say “basement”, the first thing you think of is one of the following: dark, damp or depressing. Unfortunately, that perception is what holds most of us back from developing this useful space in our home. But let’s face it, there comes a time in every family’s life when you realize you need more space. Ours came when we found out we were having twin boys! They are now almost two years old, so having a developed basement for them and our seven year old daughter to play in together has been a life-saver.
With a little imagination, any basement can become a cheerful and happy space that you and your kids will love to spend time in. Here are my Top 5 Tips for creating a great basement space!
Tip #1: Open it up.
Most basements are an after-thought in building a home – something to be finished later. As a result, most of us don’t give much consideration to the basement layout before the home is framed and those stubborn ‘load-bearing’ walls go up. For example, I was stuck with a wall going straight through the center of the space. Ugh. But instead of creating several small and choppy rooms, we were able to create the illusion of an open space. We removed the wall of the staircase and replaced it with a railing. We also opened up the space beneath our staircase, and where possible, we installed pocket doors instead of space-wasting swinging doors.
Tip #2: All the trimmings.
Most basements suffer from design disadvantages like low light and low ceilings, making them feel like a sub-standard area of our homes. Installing nice trim in your basement is a great solution for making this space feel like an important part of your home. We installed white bead board trim on our staircase and throughout key areas of the space. Other trim like wainscotting or board and batten would be equally stunning. Sure, it will cost a little extra, but will make the space feel like a legitimate part of your home.
Small windows and a lack of natural light are the biggest disadvantages in most basements. We compensated for the lack of window light by installing recessed lights – and, lots of them! But if your basement is already finished, and changing electrical is not an option, there are other creative ways to let the light shine in. Try replacing some of your doors with ones that have frosted panes. This will allow you to ‘borrow’ natural light from the rooms that have windows, but still maintain privacy in those spaces.
Tip #4: Colour Me Happy
My next tip is a bit of a rule-breaker: don’t be afraid of using saturated color in a basement! I know, I know, this goes against everything your local paint store told you! And, in part, they are right. After all, color theory says that dark colors will absorb light, while light colors will reflect it. But it also explains why so many basements are a boring version of ‘builder beige’! I am a believer that bright and vivid colour can bring any space to life, even a basement. If you aren’t lucky enough to have much natural or ambient light in your basement, you can still paint an accent wall or two with a vivid colour, and paint the remaining walls a lighter hue. We chose a deep red (Benjamin Moore “Rapture Red”) for our accent walls, and painted the other walls a lighter colour. Another solution is to install lots of white trim for contrast. And, don’t forget that textiles and other accessories are a great way to add fun pops of colour!
Tip #5: Make a statement!
Murals, wall quotes, chalkboards, gallery walls or a kids’ art gallery…if you’re like me, you’ve probably collected lots of fun decorating ideas from blogs like this one. But perhaps you’ve been ‘afraid’ to try these on your main floor. Well, your basement is the perfect area in your home to take some decorating ‘risks’. Infuse the space with whimsy and personality! For example, in our basement, we painted a door my favorite colour, robin’s egg blue, and we created a special kids’ art wall. Allow the space to tell your family’s story in creative and unexpected ways.
So there you are…my top five tips for creating a bright and cheerful basement space – that is both kid-friendly and a space that adults can enjoy too! I hope you’ll pop by and visit me at apopofpretty.com some time soon.
Thanks again to Tiffany for having me.
Have an awesome day!

My new craft room is just about pulled together except for a few final touches. Yippee!
Last week, I showed you a little wall art collection that I created for my craft room from patterned scrap paper and stationary. In case you missed it, check out my last post, or hop over to the Tip Junkie where it was featured the other day!
Well, I didn’t stop there. I also had a space to fill over my craft desk.
Here’s a little sneak peek of the finished result before I tell you the details!
I still had a bunch of those black frames with white mats leftover from a gallery wall that I disassembled in our bedroom awhile back. I thought about filling them with crafty words or images, cut by my Silhouette.
I searched the Silhouette library for images that represented different creative activities that inspire me. I found the cutest images – like a vintage sewing machine, a sweet camera, and ‘flea market’ style chairs. (Side note – I have no affiliation with Silhouette; just thought I’d mention that since I’ll be talking a bit about my Silhouette in this post).
Since I wanted a little more detail in each image that a cut shape would provide, I decided to try out my Silhouette sketch pens for the first time. (This was super easy – just replace your blade with one of the pens). I loved the effect – the images kinda looked like little artist sketches!
I found that the line was a little too thin for wall art, so I traced each image over with a black sharpie.
They now kinda resembled the type of marker sketches that creative teams use in an ad agency to illustrate their preliminary their ideas. I’ve always loved these kinds of rough renderings… perhaps because they show creativity in it’s rawest form, before it’s been touched by fancy computers and printing presses.
Next I used my pastels to add a little pop of colour to each ‘sketch’. (Doesn’t sketch sound so much more artistic than digital image, lol?).
I then created and cut my ‘crafty words’ on my Silhouette, using black card stock, and mounted them to each white mat using 3D glue dots for some extra dimension.
All that was left was to frame them, and hang them up, and see how they looked as a little collection!
I am really loving how they turned out! They coordinate well with my craft room’s pink/black/turquoise color scheme.
If you don’t have a Silhouette, you can still very easily do a project like this with:
- Images from books or found online
- Tracing paper
- Chipboard letters found at any craft store
Until next time,
I’ve been working away on organizing my new craft room /
office, but I thought I’d pop by and share this cute little wall art project with you!
If you’ve been following my blog for awhile, you might have noticed that I like creating my own wall art. One of my favorite things to use is scrapbook paper. I combined several sheets to create a large personalized picture for my twin boys’ ‘mod elephant’ nursery. And, just recently, I added a little pop to my “poppy wall” with some small frames of paper.
Scrapbook paper comes in so many patterns and textures that it’s easy to find something graphic to coordinate with any room’s decor. It’s kinda like mini-wallpaper – you get the graphic impact, without the commitment to a whole wall or room. And the best part? It’s affordable. Like, REALLY affordable. You can’t beat a dollar or two per sheet!
I knew I wanted to create a feminine (but modern) wall collection in my new craft room. And I happened to be leafing through one of my 7-year-old daughter’s ‘fashion’-related activity books with her, when I came across some awesome vibrant pink paper in different patterns. Then the light bulb went off! I swiped a few sheets from her book, and grabbed some pretty black and white file folders that I had on hand. Within an hour, I had the following art collection framed and on the wall! It came together so quickly and easily that I didn’t even takes any progress shots for this post.
Because I had the frames on hand, this project cost me nothing! I bet you have some old frames lying around too that you could re-purpose for a project like this.
I’ll show you the rest of my super-girly craft room later this week!
Until next time, happy DIY wall art-ing!
