With Easter just a week away, I finally managed to pull together some Easter decorating around here! The other day, I shared some of my Easter decorating ideas from the past few years. (Click here if you missed that post.) If you saw it, you’ll notice many of the same Easter decorations here; I just mixed them up in a different way.
.
.
I really liked the simplicity of the muted Easter mantel I created a couple of years back (see my 2011 Easter mantel, featured at Better Homes & Gardens). So I decided to stick with the same color scheme, but I added some mossy, woodland-inspired items. That mossy grapevine wreath has been re-purposed a bunch of times. You last saw it hanging on my front door as a St. Patrick’s Day wreath, no joke. {BTW, have I ever told you how I love to re-use old wreaths again and again after I tire of them? Why yes, come to think of it, I have…right over here!} I just pulled everything off, and started from scratch with my glue gun and some eggs!
.
.
I’m totally head-over-heels mad for that moss-covered bunny. He was a fab HomeSense (Canadian) find. (I added the blue velvet ribbon.) I’m also mad for HomeSense, but those of you who know me already know that!
.
.
You’ll see that I have a thing for the Easter bunny! The other cute one is from Pier One.
.
This muted blue, vintage-looking Easter bunny has been around for awhile. He’s definitely my fave!
.
.
A little bit of decorating magic happened when I threw those blue speckled eggs into that moss-covered pot. I just looooove how those colors look against one another!
.
.
I also found the newsprint-covered eggs at HomeSense, but they’d be a really easy diy Easter craft project. All you’d need is newspaper, mod podge, and plastic eggs. (Please don’t look to closely at them. I noticed through my camera lens that Easter Greetings is spelled “Easeter Greetings” all over the egg! Made in China, maybe? Too funny!)
.I
I added a few other little touches throughout the space, but kept it simple…
.
.

.
My 8yo daughter is going to decorate the mantel in our basement family room. I’m expecting lots of pink!
.
I hope you enjoyed the Easter pictures! Have a wonderful Spring weekend.
.
Until next time,
Hope you all enjoyed St. Paddy’s Day!
.
March is really flying by, isn’t it? Now that all the leprechaun fun is dying down, I’m looking forward to taking down the St. Patrick’s Day decorations from my mantel (click here, if you missed that post!), and decorating it for Easter over the next few days.
.
I’m not sure what I’ll come up with. I’ll definitely use some of my favorite Easter decorations, but I enjoy changing things up from year to year.
.
In the meantime, I thought I’d share some of my Easter decorating ideas over the past few years.
.
.
.
.
.
.
My favorite place to start is my mantel!
.
Over the past few years, I’ve created several Easter and Spring Mantels. The simple Easter mantel below, was from 2011. Since then, it’s been featured at both HGTV.com.and Better Homes & Gardens in round-ups of Easter mantel decorating ideas, and more recently at One King’s Lane. I liked how the muted color scheme was calming, and blended in with our decor. Most Easter decorations are really colorful – with pinks, yellows and greens – but that doesn’t mean you have to go that route if you prefer a simpler look.
.
This next mantel was not nearly as under-stated! Last spring, I decided to decorate around the song “Singing in the Rain” which my daughter sang in a local musical festival at the time. I created it in early Spring, and planned to keep it this way through Easter.
.
..
As much as I loved the pink and other happy colors, I grew tired of them, and decided to change it up again before Easter holidays! (Yes, I’m that much of a freak when it comes to seasonal decor
.) Because I was getting tired of decorating the mantel by then (ha!), I kept it much simpler with some candles, a green feather wreath with blue eggs, and a couple of mercury-glass looking decorative Easter eggs.
.
.
.Besides decorating my mantel, here are a few other super easy and fun little decorating ideas I’ve used in past Easters…
.
1. Eggs strung on twine for an easy diy Easter garland:
.Display .
2. Dyed eggs in a jar (great if you have toddlers like me who like to break things):
..
3. Kids’ Easter art on some twine (using clothespins):
...
.
4. Sequined eggs hung from the chandelier:

.5.A fun way to disp
5. A fun paper Easter banner on the stair railing:
..
6. A diy Easter wreath for your front door:
( pssst…I made this one with a pool noodle, dish cloths and painter’s drop cloth!)

7. Fresh tulips always look great!.
.
OK, I seriously love Easter decorations! I’m chomping at the bit to pull out the bunnies and eggs.

How about you? Have you already decorated your home for Easter? Are you planning to?

Until next time,

Pin ItI hope you all had a wonderful Christmas Day yesterday! Last year at about this time, I looked back at my full year of fireplace mantel decorating ideas (for 2011), season by season. I thought I’d do it again for 2012. I’ve been freakishly addicted to decorating my mantel for special holidays long before I started blogging about home decor. But when I did start blogging, I was happy to discover that there are lots more ‘mantel freaks’ out there too! It’s fun and creative, and it helps in some small way to keep our home feeling festive even in the doldrums of our regular routine.
In 2012, my mantel changed at least 10 times from what I could count (yup, freakishly, I tell ya)!
Here were some of my faves…

Pin ItIf you have a mantel, shelf, or console table, you don’t have to look far for Easter decorating ideas. A few weeks ago, I decorated amy fireplace mantel for Spring (my Singing in the Rain Spring Mantel below) which I fully intended to keep around through Easter. But while de-cluttering our storage closet a few days ago, I came across my stash of Easter decor. And the wheels started turning…Could I? Should I? And before I knew it,
this…
became this…
Yes, I know what you are thinking. This girl is coo-koo, coo-koo. And, yes, I agree. When it comes to decorating, its like an external force takes over, and I have no self-control. The good thing is that I rounded up Easter decor I already had. I bought those pretty mercury-glass-looking Easter eggs at Winners (Canadian version of Marshalls) earlier this winter. They were really inexpensive.
I also bought the ‘Easter’ letters awhile back; they were originally covered in a coating of pastel polka dots, but I sprayed them in ‘champagne silver’ metallic paint.

Glass candlesticks are my mantle staple – I’ve had them for years, and you’ll see them on almost every mantel I’ve decorated. I bought the little egg wreath last year for my daughter’s room; it was completely lime green then, but I added a few muted blue eggs and some white feathers to tone it down a bit. Finally, I filled the little round frame with some pretty scrapbook paper. Of course, I couldn’t leave out my two vintage-looking bunnies (seen on last year’s Easter mantel). They’re not on the mantel this year, but they’re in on on the fun.
This newly decorated mantel feels more calming than the intense pops of pink in my original ‘spring’ one (above). The bright pink tulips were fun for a few weeks, but it was the kind of mantel that you can tire of easily. So I’m glad I changed things up.
Until next time, don’t be afraid to decorate whenever you feel inspired…even if others think you’re bonkers

PS. I’m also sharing this post over at Beth’s!
as well as…
Pin ItI just finished decorating a mantel for Spring / Easter.
This year I opted to go with a happy Spring theme rather than an overtly-Easter one.
Last year’s Easter mantel, recently featured on Better Homes & Gardens, was decorated with vintage bunnies and robins’ eggs. I planned to use those things again this year, but once I pulled them out of storage, I immediately felt bored. Besides, its fun to challenge yourself to do something entirely different!
My sweet girly just recently performed “Singing in the Rain” in the big music festival here.
Look at that bright smile…such a little sweetie! (Yes, I’m biased!) So these days, just about everybody in our home has Singing in the Rain stuck in their heads: a result of 12+ weeks of my daughter’s practice. Even one of my 2-year old twin boys has his own version which he’ll gladly sing for a smile: ”Singing in the rain…singing in the rain…I sooooooo happy again!” Now and again, he’ll stop what he’s doing and simply say “Mommy, I so happy!” Precious.
I think that Singing in the Rain is a perfect Spring theme for decorating a mantel. It might seem gloomy but the rain doesn’t seem so bad when you know that there’s warmer weather and bright blooms in our future. Besides, without rain, there’d be no rainbows! Around here, we get lots of rain during Spring. So, instead of complaining, why not buy yourself a pair of totally cute rain boots and sing your way through it instead?
Check back on Monday. I’ll tell you how I created this mantel with….scrapbook paper!
Until next time, keep singing in the rain!

I thought I’d share some fun news. My Easter Mantel from last year has been featured by Better Homes and Gardens home decorating ideas! You can find it by clicking here: Better Homes & Gardens - Real Home Spring & Easter Mantel Decorating Ideas.
This mantel was also featured on HGTV.com earlier this year in an article by Layla Palmer of The Lettered Cottage called “Decorating Your Mantel Year-Round”.
Looking back, I really like the simplicity of this mantel, versus my typical style of seasonal decorating. I skipped out on using the traditional Easter pastels (like yellow, pink, and mint green); and, instead stuck with a very muted color scheme. The potted grass and boxwood wreath provided an injection of nature (and some nice texture), while the glass candlesticks added a little sparkle. Maybe I can learn from my own mantel: Less is More. I’ve always been a “More is More” kind of decorator, but I find myself slowly moving away from that approach, and craving more clutter-free and simple living spaces.
I can’t wait to get started on this year’s Spring mantel. Spring is one of my favorite seasons for decorating. Do I say that every season? Yes, now that I say it, I think I do, lol.
Well, I really mean it when it comes to Spring. Spring weather comes late here, so we don’t get the traditional Spring flowers at the same time as warmer climates do. A big booooo to that. Sometimes spring flowers don’t bloom here until mid to late-June when the rest of you are already at the beach in your bikinis. (Jealous!)
So in the meantime, I’ll try and fake Spring by decorating inside with some bright blooms here and there.
Looking forward to sharing a newly-decorated Spring / Easter mantel with you in the coming weeks.
Until next time,
Kerri

If there’s one decor activity I’m crazy for, it’s decorating my mantel.
My mantel decor changes just about monthly around here! There doesn’t have to be a big holiday coming. Sometimes I just decorate it when the seasons change. I always thought my mantel addiction was a little cookoo, until I joined the world of home decor bloggers, and realized that there are lots of other mantel addicts out there just like me! Phew.
Some might ask, why bother? Well, it’s just one of those ‘little things’ that makes me happy. For me, decorating my mantel is a way to keep things feeling festive even in those ‘in-between’ months (like January, March or June) when the days start to blend together into one big ordinary routine.
Even my 7-year old daughter asks me “what’s wrong” when the mantel isn’t decorated for a holiday or a season. Yes, I’ve created a little mantel monster just like me.
It was fun to look back at how often it changed!
Here’s how our year looked in mantels…
Winter
After the Christmas decorations came down, the year started out with a snowy January ‘Winter Mantel’.
Valentine’s Day
By early February, it was time to edit for Valentine’s Day…
Spring / Easter
In early April, I decorated my mantel for Easter. I was THRILLED when the one and only Layla of The Lettered Cottage asked ever so politely if she could possibly include it in her upcoming HGTV.com article on decorating mantels. Um, let’s see, that answer would be …YES!
(I linked to her article How to Decorate a Mantel Year-Round here).
Summer
In June, I changed it up again, and called it my ‘Waiting for Summer Mantel’ since summer comes late in these parts! Thanks to the CSI Project for selecting it as a Top 10 Project in its Spring Mantel Challenge!
Fall
By the end of summer, I was itching to create a mantel for my favorite season of the year!
Thanks to BlogHer for featuring it on BlogHer DIY .
Halloween
When October hit, I was excited to get started on this purple-icious Halloween mantel.
November
Since Canadian Thanksgiving is in early October, November is a bit of a bore for me (which I wrote about here). While I was waiting to decorate for Christmas, my mantel looked like this. But I have to admit, I REALLY liked the simplicity for a change!

Christmas
I swore I’d wait til December to decorate my mantel for Christmas, but I cracked under the pressure! By late November, it was already decked out in red and aqua.
I gave away my secrets to decorating a Christmas mantel in a tutorial How to Decorate a Christmas Mantel which Beth was kind enough to feature at Home Stories A 2 Z: Tips and Tutorials Not to Miss. This mantel was also part of my Christmas Tour which was featured on Hooked on Houses’ “20 Very Merry House Tours”.
So, there’s where the year ended!
My mantel is still decked out for Christmas, and it will stay that way for a few more weeks. But I can’t wait to change things up again soon.
If you’re still with me after this long post, well, thanks! You deserve a drink. Go grab one, and keep enjoying the holidays in front of your own mantel!
Cheers!
Kerri
