Basement Decorating Ideas {Some Room Edits!}

Basement Decorating Ideas {Some Room Edits!}

I’m still here!  It’s been forever (2+ weeks?) since I last blogged. I’ve had some ‘life stuff’ going on, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been decorating (or, I should say redecorating). Last Spring I posted a tour of our basement family room (which was later featured on Apartment Therapy Family). Back then, I shared my basement decorating ideas which included the use of colorful accents – like toss pillows and wall art – that helped made the space feel playful and fun.  I chose those bright and cheerful accessories at the time because our twins were just babies when we developed the basement, and I hung out with them in our basement family room much more often than the playroom.

But, as our boys have grown from babies to toddlers and become more independent, they’re now more comfortable using the basement playroom just down the hall.  That’s not to say they still don’t hang in the family room with their toys (we left the train table here), but the toy chaos is so much better than it used to be!

Colorful basement family room decor

Since the basement family room is now used more for TV watching and hanging out than playing, I wanted to scale back on the bright accent colors, and add a bit more ‘polish’ to the space.  Our 10-year old leather furniture won’t be changed any time soon (if ever, if my husband had the choice, lol), and we only recently painted the space, so I was limited with what I could change.

.

Some day when I can get better shots (natural light is such a problem in basements!), maybe I’ll update my basement room tour. For now, here’s a little look at some of the small edits that helped change the look of the room.  I bought very little; I just “shopped the house” for things I could use differently.

How to Organize a Small Art Station for Kids (Martha Stewart Wall Manager)

How to Organize a Small Art Station for Kids (Martha Stewart Wall Manager)

Our 8-year old LOVES to draw. She has an art table in our basement family room but rarely uses it.  Instead, like any great artist, she prefers to make art when the inspiration strikes! This usually means right smack dab in the middle of the main floor TV room.  So she’s always had a little art desk in there too. It’s been the bane of my existence! Her arsenal of art supplies is always in a tangle since her desk is in a small corner, without room for storage.  I’ve tried a bunch of different things, but have never figured out how to organize it without crowding the room with a storage unit.

..

{Note: Even though I’ll mention Martha Stewart’s wall manager product here, this is not a sponsored product review.  I tried it, loved it and wanted to share!}

(p.s., The chick and the egg on in this photo were colored by her 3-year old brothers.  She’s totally die at the thought of anybody thinking she colored them, haha)

.

This weekend I was at Staples to get a printer cartridge, but soon found myself with an armful of Martha Stewart chalkboard labels and stylish file folders.  Are you as crazy for office supplies as I am, lol? Anyhoo, while there, I happened to notice this new ‘wall manager’ line that Martha offers, and thought it would be a perfect solution for how to organize this little disaster area…READ MORE

Hey, Sectional. Meet your friend, the Gallery Wall.

Hey, Sectional. Meet your friend, the Gallery Wall.

A couple of posts ago (in Beauty & The Beast: Decorating with a Sectional Sofa  – 5 Fab Examples) I talked about how we recently put a big sectional in our TV room, and how it’s been a bit of a challenge to decorate around.

After searching for some inspiration on how to decorate with a sectional sofa,  I decided to create a gallery wall behind the sectional to help balance out it’s huge presence.

If you follow me here, you might know that I’m already a big fan of the eclectic and ‘collected’ style that a gallery wall gives a room. I’ve created small collections of wall art throughout our home, like in our foyer (yellow and gray Sunshine-Inspired gallery wall) and our basement stairway (Colorful, Alphabet-Inspired gallery wall).

The largest one I attempted was in our living room a couple of years ago, but after we re-painted the wall, I decided not to put the gallery wall back up. I’ve missed it ever since! (See: I Miss My Living Room Gallery Wall (The great debate: Simplicity vs Eclectic/Collected Decor?).

So I was excited about the idea of creating a similar wall in the TV Room.  I don’t talk about this room much around here, mainly because it’s,  ahem, “well-lived-in”, which essentially means it’s never fit for photographs, lol.

I can never seem to get a handle on it! It’s the magnet on our main floor for toys and crafts and craziness. The kids have a playroom / family room in the basement, but for whatever reason, this main floor room seems to be their favorite!  It’s small in square footage, but has high cathedral ceilings (16ft), which helps provide the illusion of more breathing room!

Here you can see how the kids use READ MORE

Beauty & The Beast: Decorating with a Sectional Sofa {5 Fab Examples}

Sectional sofas. It seems that in the world of decorating and design, you either love ’em or hate ’em!  Perhaps that’s because decorating with a sectional can be a design dilemma. But say what you will about their aesthetic non-appeal, sectionals have their advantages.

Back in the Fall, when our 13-year old sofa set could no longer withstand the antics of our 3-year old boys, we gave in and purchased a big leather sectional for our upstairs family room.  sectional sofa and gallery wallSince it has enough seating for all 5 of us, it meant we could get rid of the other seating in the room to free up more floor space for the kids to play. So, oddly, a sectional can actually free up space!

Not to mention, that chaise lounge thingy (is that what you call it?) on the corner is super comfortable! So we seem to use the room more often as as a family now too.  Here’s a quick pic I took before the holidays when I was still trying to figure out that wall behind the sectional.  I’m still working on getting it ‘right’! More photos soon! ===>

I have to admit, decorating with a sectional is indeed a little tricky! They’re huge and awkward. It’s like decorating around an elephant. So I went looking for some inspiration on Houzz, Pinterest and blogs.

Decorating with a sectional sofa

I found that all of the rooms with sectionals that I liked the best had two things in common:

Our Dr. Seuss Christmas Tree! (2012)

Our Dr. Seuss Christmas Tree! (2012)

If you read my blog last Christmas, you might remember that I created a full-on Dr. Seuss-themed Christmas tree for our basement family room!  Well, it’s up again (yay!), and we’re still just as excited about it.

Decorate a Dr. Seuss Christmas Tree

The best thing is that this year, our 3-year old boys really ‘get it’.  Last year, they were kind of oblivious.  But now that they love “Cat in da Hat”, looking at the tree brings them endless enjoyment.

Cat in the Hat Christmas Tree Ornament

I didn’t make anything new for the tree this year.  I think I maxed out on handmade Dr. Seuss decoration ideas last year! (You can find a tutorial on how to make my Dr. Seuss decorations here.) But I’m loving the Dr. Seuss themed ornaments that I received last year as gifts, and a couple that I bought recently.  So, for those of you who haven’t seen last year’s posts on our Dr. Seuss tree, I thought I’d share some more pics!

Although it’s not strictly a Who-ville Christmas Tree, we definitely have lots of Grinchy ornaments on it! There’s The Grinch, Cindy Lou Who, Max the Dog, and a bunch of Whovillers. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (with Jim Carey) is our 8-year old daughter’s all-time favorite Christmas movie.  OK, I’ll admit, I seriously LOVE it too.  It’s hysterical. (“Holiday, whoby whaty?!?” Classic!)
