The Etsy.com Blog & Me : DIY Hostess Gift Tutorial {Lampshade Flower}
Yesterday, I was over on the Etsy.com blog, sharing a tutorial for an easy, diy hostess gift. As a huge Etsy fan myself, I was thrilled to be asked to be a part of their Etsy International DIY Advent Calendar Project! From December 1st to the 25th, Etsy is sharing festive new DIY projects on their International Blogs (UK, France, Germany and Australia). Contributed by guest bloggers from around the world as part of their DIY Advent Calendar series, each day a different project will be featured.
I was excited to use the opportunity to create a project that I’ve had in my head for awhile, a magnetic lampshade flower, as it would make an easy diy hostess gift during the holidays. Giving a handmade hostess gift is such a nice gesture during the holiday season. Many of us, however, are intimated by the idea of making something to give others. If that sounds like you, don’t worry. I promise that you will be able to make this!

Holiday ‘House Tour’: A Gold and White Christmas
Did you catch my post about our gold and white Christmas tree the other day? I’ve also added some other gold and white Christmas decorating touches around the house. This year’s Christmas decorating is a little more glam than usual!
Gold and White Christmas Decor: The Foyer
I hesitate to call this a Holiday House Tour like some of those you’ll see on other decorating blogs this time of year. Have you seen some of those? Wowsa, soooo beautiful, and so thorough! (If you follow me on Facebook, I’ve been sharing some of my faves over there.)
The thing is, photographing a holiday house tour requires a tidy home and well, mine, just isn’t! (Yet?). (You see my 2012 holiday house tour here and my 2011 holiday house tour here). Keepin’ it real: there’s still some random Christmas decorating bins and bags hanging out in the corners, along with the regular daily stuff that 3 kids leave behind. So to spare you from all that, I’ve just photographed some of the little pops of Christmas you’ll find around our home.
In the foyer, you’ll find our new white deer head hanging in a big green wreath (more on styling this guy in another post!), with some gold polka dot ribbon. The foyer table has a little white tree decked out in gold and light blue beaded garlands. READ MORE
Our Gold and White Christmas Tree {Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas}
The idea of a gold and white Christmas tree has been on my mind for awhile now. I’ve been crushing on gold and white decor this year (see Sold on Gold), and there’s no better time to indulge in gold than at Christmas!
Call me crazy, but just about every year, I edit my tree colors. You can see how I manage to change my Christmas tree color scheme affordably over here. In that blog post, I explained that the thing I love best about Christmas decorating is the chance to be creative. Our Christmas tree never looks exactly the same because I enjoy the process of mixing things up. READ MORE HERE
Red & Turquoise Fundraiser Tree {Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas}
Today, my sister and I were busy with our decorating gig, pretty-ing up a Christmas tree at my daughter’s school for a PTA fundraiser. This is the second year we’ve created a tree for this event. The tree and the funds for decorations are donated by some other generous parents, and we donate our time to pull it together. Basically, we decide on the Christmas tree decorating idea / concept, then select the decorations, and decorate it. Last year, our ‘theme’ for the fundraiser was a Winter Wonderland tree. Everything was very white, translucent and sparkly; and, we imagined it ending up in a more formal living room.
This year, we changed things up, and went a totally different route. We wanted to create a happy, cottage-y tree with lots of fun color – something that kids could enjoy as much as their parents, in a more casual setting like a playroom or TV room. We chose the cheerful combo of red and aqua / turquoise, just like the Canadian Tire Christmas tablescape I revealed here the other day.
