Wreaths and Front Door Decor Ideas

Wreaths and front door decor ideas for every season, holiday and occasion: how to make a DIY wreath and how to decorate your front door for Fall, Halloween, Easter, Summer, Winter, Valentines Day and more.

A Year of DIY Wreaths / Door Decor {How to make a wreath for any season}

A Year of DIY Wreaths / Door Decor {How to make a wreath for any season}

Just like I love decorating my mantel for every season, I’m also obsessed with changing up what’s on my front door!  I think the reason I like these seasonal decorating activities so much is because I can indulge in decorating without taking on a big project like a room makeover.  Also, I’m just one of those people who likes to celebrate different seasons and holidays – and I like getting my kids excited about them too!

Seasonal Door Decor Wreaths

When I create something new for my door, sometimes I edit an old wreath that’s been banging around for years (like my Fall Burlap Wreath, my Traditional Christmas Wreath) and other times, I start from scratch (like with my Sisal & Starfish Wreath).  Some of them are complete DIY disasters and don’t turn out at all like I had imagined; and, sometimes, they turn out better. But regardless, I love the creative process!  Here’s a look back at our wreaths (door decor) over the past year!

Valentine’s Day Wreath

In early February, I made a new Valentine’s Day wreath from an (unusual) combination of burlap and pink tulle.  I also used different pink grosgrain ribbons.  You can find the tutorial for that pink ribbon and burlap Valentine’s Day rag wreath here.

St. Patrick’s Day Wreath

I created this Irish-inspired wreath for St. Patrick’s Day using mostly dollar store materials, like sparkly green tulle, a big die cut shamrock, and shamrock garland.

Easter Wreath

This shabby chic-style Easter wreath was a new creation, but I used mostly materials that I had on hand.  It was made from a pool noodle that I shaped into an oval, and then covered with painter’s drop cloth and ripped up dish towels!  I also used Easter eggs that I pulled off an old wreath.  This was one of my DIY wreaths that I considered a disaster at first.  It turned out nothing like I imagined! But, eventually I embraced it’s shabbiness and hung it anyway!  You can see how I made this Easter wreath here.

Holiday Home Tour 2012

Holiday Home Tour 2012

OK, so I *think* I’m done with the Christmas decorating.  When it comes to seasonal decorating, I have a slight problem, in case you haven’t noticed by now.   I have to make a full stop; otherwise, I could keep going until the 25th! But then I’d have way too much to take down later.  Plus, I have to move on to a million other things on my Christmas to-do list.  Like, for example, I haven’t wrapped a thing yet.  Nodda.  I like decorating so much more than wrapping.

Decorate a Traditional Christmas Wreath

So tonight, to procrastinate on the wrapping a little longer ;-), I thought I’d pull together a summary of all the random Christmas decorating blog posts that I’ve shared over the past month.  In the home decor blogging world, that kind of blog post is usually called a “Holiday Home Tour”. That label is a little misleading in my case.  I am only going to show you the areas of my home that are presentable at the moment.  Unlike a real home tour, I’m going to shield you from the mess of Christmas bins (and glitter) that still needs to be put away!

The Porch

Our front porch is decorated with real greenery, white lights and traditional Christmas colors.  I usually stick to red out there because it’s such a festive color, and is easily seen from a distance.  For the first time in a decade, I also used some gold in my Christmas decor this year.

Front Porch Traditional Christmas Decor

The gold and red polka dot ribbon that I used is traditional, but fun.  I’m a big fan of polka dots!

Front Porch Christmas Decorations

Earlier in the month, I posted a tutorial on how to makeover an old artificial wreath, and create the look of real greenery using just a few sprigs of cedar.

How to make a Christmas wreath

The Tree

Our Christmas tree sits right in the center of our open concept Living Room / Kitchen area. For the first time, I decorated a 100% neutral Christmas tree this year, using champagne, white / cream and chocolate brown.

Neutral Christmas Tree

I also gave a little Christmas decorating tip / tutorial on how I added ribbon to my Christmas tree, which was a little different than in previous years.  Last year, my tutorial on how to decorate a Christmas mantel (including how to add ribbon to a Christmas mantel) was really popular, so I thought this might be helpful too!

How to put ribbon on a tree

Our 100% neutral tree only lasted a few days! “Neutral”became “bleu-tral” when I added a pop of muted blue to the tree.  It still feels pretty neutral, but the touch of blue blends so much better with the room.

Traditional Christmas Wreath Makeover {The look of real greenery}

Traditional Christmas Wreath Makeover {The look of real greenery}

Remember how I said I enjoy the creative process of Christmas decorating? Well, really ‘the creative process’ is just a fancy word for ‘fly by the seat of my pants’. I usually have a broad vision, but rarely a well thought-out plan, before I start my Christmas decorating. In case you were under any illusions that I have some kind of magic formula when it comes to pulling it all together, I present to you Exhibit A…

This is what my step looked on Saturday afternoon. Yup, when it comes to seasonal decorating, this is how I roll ;-).

Christmas decorating

And, do you see that plain Jane, oh-so-artificial, wreath on the step?  Well, it’s been kicking around for about 13 years. (That’s like a lot of my wreaths. I’ve learned to never throw away a good wreath form!) But, it’s about as artificial as it gets. This wreath was born years before fake (or “ever-lasting” 😉 ) greenery began to mimic the look of the real stuff.

It’s gone through many updates over the years. Whenever I get tired of it, or it begins to feel outdated, I just take off the embellishments and start all over again.  I’ve learned the hard way not to glue gun anything to this wreath – wiring or tying on the embellishments makes it so much easier to disassemble!

This year, I knew I wanted to have a big, full traditional Christmas wreath with the look of real greenery; which is a far cry from this old wreath. But I pulled it out of storage anyway, wondering if I could somehow revive it. After the dust settled (oh, how I wish I had one of those cool time-lapse videos to insert here, but I’m just not that technical!),  here’s where I ended up:

My Magnolia Leaf Holiday Decorating Crush

My Magnolia Leaf Holiday Decorating Crush

Ever since we visited NYC just before Christmas last year, I’ve been crushing on the idea of using magnolia leaves in holiday decorating.  There’s just something ‘0h-so-Martha’ in the natural simplicity of a magnolia wreath or garland. Magnolia garlands and wreaths seemed to be everywhere in The City, but this particular display on 5th Ave was the most inspiring…

Christmas Magnolia Leaves NYC

Perhaps using magnolia leaves for holiday decorating isn’t new to most of you.  But, in my neck of the woods, magnolia trees aren’t abundant.  Heck, I’m not even sure if they grow here. (Can’t you tell how much I know about gardening?!?)   Even if they do, it’s not like you can just go out and gather hundreds of magnolia leaves off the ground for a decorating project. Apparently, you need between 250 and 300 magnolia leaves to make a 6-foot length of garland!

But, as luck would have it, the other day,  I noticed they were selling them in bunches at Costco. Ooh la la! So I went looking for inspiration on how I could incorporate them into some of my Christmas decorating this year.  Here’s a few pretty decorating ideas that I immediately fell for… READ MORE

Our Halloween Front Porch {Giant Glittery “Boo” Letters & Ghostly Urns}

It’s Friday (insert happy dance) and I need a change of pace.  So, I’m interrupting my regularly scheduled 31 Days of Do-It-Yourself Wall Art programming to bring you… drumroll…Halloween on our front porch.

Halloween decorating front porch

Because two of our kids are still teeny-weenies, I went with kid-friendly whimsical Halloween decor outside  just like I did with my Halloween mantel, which I talked a bit about last week.

Decorated Halloween Mantel

I fell  for those giant, glittery BOO letters as soon as I saw them at our local Hallmark.  The first time I spotted them, I thought, hmmmm, I could easily make those for a fraction of the price. All you’d need is styrofoam, orange paint and glitter.  But in the end, I decided to make things easier on myself and buy them this time around .  I think they were intended for a shelf or mantel, but I decided to tie them together with black ribbon and make a Halloween wreath with them instead.
